Our Story

Our Story

The Bumrun 5K was founded in 2012 by Dr. Ian Bookman - head gastroenterologist at one of Toronto's top hospitals - after he saw increasing colorectal cancer rates, needless deaths, and a persistent lack of awareness in his own clinic and across the country.

Bumrun story

Since those early days in Toronto, Bumrun has expanded to have 5Ks from coast to coast, including a virtual 5K option for all Canadians no matter where they are - and we will not stop there!

Right now in Canada:

Our mission is to:

Bumrun story

Colorectal cancer is happening at younger and younger ages - so advocacy and screening is more important than ever before. With early diagnosis, colorectal cancer is incredibly treatable.

While anyone over 50 needs to have regular screening in current Canadian recommendations, people with a family history of colorectal cancer, who have been diagnosed with polyps, or who have inflammatory bowel disease are at increased risk.

Bumrun story

Our 5K community helps generate funds towards colorectal cancer screening, and the awareness that saves lives. Bumrun is proud to donate 100% of proceeds to charities with a proven track record of getting behind the behinds of Canadians.

Since 2012, Bumrun has raised more than $1.8M for expanded CRC screening access like technology upgrades and clinic expansions, cutting-edge research, and support for patients and their families.
